Being aware of what is going on can help you out immensely when
traveling. Know the basics like what gate you need to go to, what
zone you are seated in, and what airline is operating your flight.
But, beyond that pay attention, Don't just be there, Be aware.
Listen and watch for signage that might tell you of possible gate
changes, delays, or worse, cancellations. Showing up on time
doesn't always ensure you'll make your flight.

If you are in doubt ask an airline representative. Find out things
like when boarding will begin and end. If there is a delay ask what
it is due to. If a beltloader just took out a wing you may want to
look for other flight options before they run out.

When you book a reservation make sure to use accurate
information. If the airline has a valid email, cell phone number,
etc. they will be able to communicate vital flight info to you
wherever you are and give you an edge over other passengers.

Lastly, be in the gate area. This is usually the best way to see
what is going on. You can see a plane deplaning and boarding. If
you know how to read people you can tell when something goes
wrong by a gate agent's demeanor. Also, if you are close enough to
the agent you can hear the radio chatter that they use to talk with
the ramp crew about what is really going on. If you are at the bar,
in the shops, or outside security you are hurting your own chances
of getting somewhere.
