Most of us have had a negative experience with children during a flight whether that be our own kids or not. If you think about it though, a flight can be pretty rough on adults so why wouldn't it be hard on little ones? Sitting confined in a small space and being told to be quiet for hours at a time . . . I know adults who can't do this. Does it mean your flight has to be a nightmare for you and your children? The answer thankfully is no. A little preparation can make all the difference for a successful in-flight experience. Bring an assortment of not just toys but activities. Toys will allow a child to entertain themself for awhile but, they like change and for you to cater to what can seem like a short attention span. When giving toys out for play don't unload your whole arsenal up-front and don't let them know what all you have. Bring out a few things at a time and let them be surprised, when they are done with it return it to the bag and bring out something new. Make sure you have a variety of toys, figurines, coloring books, electronic games (with earphones), and some card games like go fish. Having one simple game like this helps them get the interaction they need from you in positive way. This beats the Mom Mom Mom Mom Mom Mom Mom or equally popular Dad Dad Dad Dad Dad. If you are traveling as a family and it is possible for you to sit apart in different sections of the plane with your children this can be very helpful as well. It keeps younger children separate from possible squabbling and that can be very nice for everybody. For long flights switching out parents can be refreshing for both parents and children. Bring your own snacks when flying with kids. This will avoid pricey airport or in-flight alternatives. It also allows you to be as healthy or unhealthy as you want to be. I would suggest staying away from the sugary treats as much as possible. Hyper kids are kind of contrary to planning for a peaceful flight. You know your kids better than anyone else, with a little thought you can plan the best way to manage the flight for yourself and for them. Travel Safe, Travel Smart . . . Get Somewhere! |
